Sex toys can also include sex furniture and/or erotic furniture which is furniture designed to enhance the sexual experience, such as slings, sex swings, and a device for spanking.

Sex toys have been used for many years; archaeologists have found artifacts dating back 30,000 years.

The first dildos were made of stone, tar, wood, bone, ivory, limestone, teeth, and other materials that could be shaped aspenises and that were firm enough to be used as penetrative sex toys. Scientists believe that a 20-centimeter siltstone phallus from the Upper Paleolithic period 30,000 years ago, found in HohleFels Cave near Ulm, Germany, may have been used as a dildo.

Prehistoric double-headed dildos have been found which date anywhere from 13,000–19,000 years ago.

Various paintings from ancient Egypt around 3000 BCE feature dildos being used in a variety of ways. In medieval times, a plant called the “Cantonese groin” was soaked in hot water to enlarge and harden for women to use as dildos.

Greek dildos were often made from leather stuffed with wool to give them varying degrees of thickness and firmness. They were often lubricated with olive oil and used for sexual practice and other activities. The Greeks were also one of the first groups to use the term “toy” about a dildo. In Italy during the 1400s, dildos were made of leather, wood, or stone. In the Eurasia Ice Age (40,000-10,000 BCE) and Roman era dildos are speculated to have been used for defloration rituals. This isn't the only example of dildos being used for ritual ceremonies, as people in 4000 BCE Pakistan used them to worship the God Shiva. Chinese women in the 15th century used dildos made of lacquered wood with textured surfaces.

China's Han dynasty, around 206 BCE to 220 CE, enjoyed a particularly rich relationship with their sex toys. Tomb excavations revealed that the dynasty's wealthy elites were particularly into their bronze dildos and jade butt plugs. The bronze dildo was used similarly to the dildos of today, but the jade butt plug was used for its ability to ward off spiritual and bodily decay.

A bronze dildo with a ring attached to it (possibly worn as a strap on) was found inside the tomb of an aristocrat in the Chinese city of Yizheng in the Jiangsu province. Judging by the materials and intricate details used when creating this relic, the ancient Chinese considered sex toys an art form.

Macaura's Pulsocon Hand Vibrator was one of the more advanced hand-crank vibrators created in the 1880s and sold throughout the early 1900s.

This handheld vibrator could deliver 5,000 vibrations per minute. Of course, it required a lot more effort than modern vibrators. You had to hold one end, place the other on your body, and then manually turn the crank handle.

The Polar Cub Electric Vibrator, which came out in 1928, was electric and had a boast textured knob to provide different pleasurable sensations.

In the 1940s The Oster Stim-U-Lax for Barbers was a vibrating device you strapped onto the back of your hand to deliver powerful vibration wherever it was placed. It was marketed for barbers to use on their customers' scalps, but people caught on to its other benefits early on and it took off as a hush-hush sextoy.

In late 1940-1950 The And is Vibrator was marketed for both men and women as a beauty and health tool that could be used to help the blood circulate to the scalp, face, and body. This vibrator had many texturized add-ons that could stimulate many body parts.

The Hitachi Magic Wand (renamed Magic Wand Original and Original Magic Wand) is an AC-powered wand vibrator from Japan. It was originally manufactured for relieving tension and relaxing sore muscles but is most famous for its use as a sex toy. The Hitachi Magic wand was used as a vibrator and masturbation aid for women during the sex-positive movement in the late 1960s. It functions effectively as a clitoral vibrator. The wand is 30 cm long and weighs 540 g with stimulation provided by its rubberized 64 mm head.

In 1983, Japanese sex toy company Vibratex invented the now-iconic sex toy called The Rabbit. It provided both penetration and clitoral stimulation. Unfortunately, Japanese manufacturers were not allowed to make sex toys, so they shaped their devices into animal shapes.

The penis pump as we know it has a long history. First conceived in the 1870s, this device did not get much wide-spread use until the 1960s. Even though the design has changed somewhat and now comes in a wide variety of styles, the basic concept has remained unchanged over the years.

A clitoral pump is a sex toy designed for sexual pleasure that is applied to the clitoris or labia to create suction and increase blood flow to the genitals.

The oldest known relic that’s believed to be a strap-on is from the Upper Paleolithic Period; c10,000bc. Among the many artifacts that appear to be dildos, a double ‘baton’ has been discovered with a hole in the middle. Archeologists theorize that this hole is for a strap to hold it to the wearer.

The term BDSM - B/D (Bondage and Discipline), D/s (Dominance and submission), and S/M (Sadism and Masochism) originated in 1969 and was first recorded in a Usenet post in 1991. BDSM is now used as a catch-all phrase covering a wide range of activities, forms of interpersonal relationships, and distinct subcultures. Even though the term originated in 1969, this sexual behavior has been around for a while. Recent archaeological evidence suggests that dominance and submissiveness as a sexual practice date back at least 5000 years ago.

The Kama Sutra outlines specific types of allowable hitting during sex. The Kama Sutra likely contributed to the spread of many sexual practices, including BDSM, across the globe in the years following its composition.
